Why Your A/C Might Be Running But Not Cooling—And What to Do About It

by | Blog

There’s nothing more frustrating than walking into your home on a hot June day, hearing the air conditioner humming… but still feeling warm, sticky air. If your A/C is running but your house isn’t cooling down, you’re not alone—and there are a few common reasons this might be happening.

At Royal Aire, we get a lot of calls this time of year about this exact issue. So let’s break it down: why it happens, what you can check yourself, and when it’s time to call in the pros.

1. Clogged Air Filter

Let’s start with the easiest fix.

If your filter is dirty, it restricts airflow—and that means your system has to work harder to cool your home. In some cases, it can even cause the system to freeze up.

What to do:

Chico gets dusty in summer—especially with dry winds and wildfire season. Filters get dirty faster here than in coastal climates, so monthly checks are smart.

2. Thermostat Issues

It sounds obvious, but sometimes the problem isn’t with your A/C—it’s with your thermostat. Maybe someone bumped it, maybe the batteries are low, or maybe it’s not reading the temperature correctly.

What to do:

Double-check that it’s set to cool and not just “fan.” If it’s programmable, make sure the schedule hasn’t changed. Still not working? A new smart thermostat might be worth considering.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coils

If your system runs constantly without cooling, your evaporator coil might be frozen. This usually happens from restricted airflow (like that dirty filter) or low refrigerant.

What to do:

Turn the system off and let it thaw. Don’t try to chip away at the ice—just give it time. If it keeps freezing, you’ll need an HVAC technician to take a look.

We see this a lot during peak cooling season in Butte County. It’s a sign your system needs attention.

4. Low Refrigerant Levels

Your air conditioner relies on refrigerant to absorb heat from inside your home. If it’s low, the system can’t cool effectively.

What to do:

This isn’t a DIY fix. You’ll need a licensed HVAC tech to check for leaks, recharge the system, and make sure everything’s sealed properly.

⚠ Heads up: New systems use different refrigerants than older models. We’re happy to walk you through what your system needs.

5. Dirty Outdoor Unit (Condenser)

The outdoor unit is what releases the heat your system pulls from inside. If it’s clogged with leaves, dust, or debris, it can’t do its job—and your home stays warm.

What to do:

Turn off the power and gently hose down the fins. Clear away any plants or weeds growing around it. If it still doesn’t help, we can give it a professional cleaning.

6. Your System Is Just Worn Out

If your air conditioner is 12–15 years old (or older), and it’s struggling to cool your home, it might be nearing the end of its life.

What to do:

We’re not pushy about replacements, but we are honest. Sometimes a new, energy-efficient system can save you money in the long run—especially if your current one is costing you in repairs and high energy bills.
